Janice Braun is a Professor (with tenure) in the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Cell Biology and Anatomy and a member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. From 2001-2006 she was a CIHR New Investigator, she received salary support from the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) from 2001-2014. In 2010, she served as Associate Dean of Professionalism and in 2011 she was appointed to the President’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women. In 2011, she was appointed as Co-Director of Medical Sciences Graduate Program and in 2018 as Director of the Master of Biomedical Technology Graduate Program. Dr. Braun’s research interests focus on understanding the protective role of molecular chaperones in neurodegeneration. Since chaperones normally prevent the accumulation of misfolded proteins, the appearance of protein aggregates in neurodegenerative disorders implies an underlying incapacity in the chaperone machinery. Dr. Braun wants to understand how chaperones are involved in normal neural function and what role they play in preventing neurodegenerative disorders. Current specific interests focus on the role of molecular chaperones in extracellular vesicles and how changes in the extracelllar vesicle content of molecular chaperones links to neurodegenerative disease.
